Lexus LX 470 Combines Rugged Luxury with Advanced Technology
The Lexus LX 470 pioneered the segment for full-size, full-capability luxury
SUVs and continues to lead in technology and quality. Burnishing its
long-standing quality reputation, the LX 470 was named highest ranked Large
Premium Multi-Activity Vehicle in the 2006 J.D. Power and Associates Initial
Quality StudySM.
The LX 470 is powered by a sophisticated and smooth 268-horsepower, 4.7-liter
V8 and combines a robust chassis with full-time four-wheel drive and a full
array of advanced dynamic handling systems. For 2007, the LX 470 gains a new
front-passenger-seat occupant-classification sensor. The sensor signals airbag
deployment in an impact depending on whether there is a passenger in the front
seat. Front-seat-mounted side airbags and front seat and second row side-curtain
airbags, are standard.
'As did other Lexus vehicles, the LX 470 essentially steered its segment by
leading it in capability, comfort, versatility and, of course, documented
quality,' said Bob Carter, Lexus group vice president and general manager.
'We are proud that the LX 470 continues to win accolades for quality even
with the increased competition.'
Equipped with Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), the LX 470's
4.7-liter V8 engine produces 268 horsepower at 5,400 rpm and 328 lb.-ft. of peak
torque at just 3,400 rpm. The LX 470 also meets Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle II
(ULEV II) certification. Its five-speed automatic transmission provides seamless
shift quality, and shift logic holds gears on inclines for power and on descents
for increased engine braking – especially helpful when towing. Maximum towing
capacity is 6,500 lbs. with the appropriate hitch.
The Lexus LX 470 is built on a rugged body-on-frame chassis equipped with
advanced, height-adjustable hydropneumatic-assisted suspension and
computer-controlled shock-absorber damping. This combination gives the
versatile LX 470 both the smooth, composed ride expected of a Lexus and
off-road capability at the top of its segment. Standard 18 x 8-inch alloy
wheels are equipped with 275/60R18 mud- and snow-rated tires.
Four-Wheel Drive and Unique Steering Technology
The LX 470's full-time four-wheel-drive system is equally adept at handling
the rigors of slippery winter weather or deep mud or snow. A center
differential distributes the power 50:50 front-to-rear. Traction control
(TRAC) employs both brake and throttle intervention to help control wheel
spin.
Where other SUVs vary the amount of steering assist, the LX 470's innovative
Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) can vary the rack-and-pinion steering ratio
to improve maneuverability at low speeds and preserve control at highway speeds.
In slow, tight maneuvering (under 6 mph), the system provides 2.4 turns
lock-to-lock. At such low speeds, a computer-controlled actuator on the
intermediate steering shaft increases the driver's steering angle, quickening
the steering ratio. At higher speeds, the mechanism rotates slightly in the
opposite direction of steering input to decrease the total steering angle,
resulting in a 'slower' steering ratio desirable for a more controlled handling
response.
To help enhance safety, VGRS selects a higher (slower) steering ratio if the
Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system is activated, which helps to prevent
too large of a steering angle if the driver is attempting to avoid an
obstacle. The 39.1-ft. turning circle is commendable for a large luxury
vehicle.
Advanced Suspension with Adjustable Height Control
Double-wishbone independent front suspension employs torsion-bar springs for
long wheel travel, and the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system helps
to ensure smooth ride quality for all driving situations. AVS provides four
positions to control the shock absorber damping force. Position 2 will suit
most driving conditions and will automatically select the appropriate
suspension damping that driving conditions demand.
Position 1 provides a softer response on bumpy roads. Positions 3 and 4
provide increasingly greater levels of control for driving a heavily loaded
vehicle, driving at higher speeds on paved roads, or driving on unpaved roads.
When the driver shifts the two-speed transfer case into low range for
negotiating steep inclines, the AVS automatically selects the suitable damping
setting.
The LX 470 provides a minimum ground clearance of 9.8 inches. Hydraulic
Adjustable Height Control (AHC) allows the driver to raise the vehicle to
handle particularly rough off-road terrain, and to lower it for easy entry
and exit. A height-control switch and light indicate current suspension
height and will recommend optimal height as road conditions change.
Advanced Dynamic-Control Technology
An array of dynamic-control systems support safe, confident driving in the
LX 470. The ABS operates even in low range, adjusting its level of control
in response to changes in road slope. Electronic Brake-force Distribution
(EBD) allocates brake force between the front and rear wheels to help
provide added control under hard braking. Brake Assist is designed to
determine if the driver is attempting emergency braking. If the driver has
not stepped firmly enough on the brake pedal to engage the ABS, the system
applies increased braking power until pedal pressure is released.
The standard Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system helps keep the vehicle on
its intended course by detecting front-wheel and rear-wheel slide during
cornering and attempting to control either condition using torque intervention
and individual wheel braking to correct any discrepancy.
Increased Visibility
The 2007 LX 470 exemplifies the Lexus brand's leadership in advanced safety
technology. The standard Lexus Navigation System integrates a rear back-up
camera that automatically projects an image of what its lens can detect behind
the vehicle onto the navigation screen when the vehicle is in reverse gear.
The advanced optional Night View System uses near-infrared technology to
help enhance nighttime driving visibility. Near-infrared beams projected
from two lamps in the front bumper record images of objects ahead and relay
them back to a charged coupled device (CCD) camera mounted inside the
vehicle at the top of the windshield. A dedicated computer processes the
images, which are then projected onto the lower section of the windshield
within the driver's field of vision, resulting in a picture similar to that
on a black and white television.
Lexus Link®
The available Lexus Link system combines Global Positioning Satellite (GPS)
and digital cellular-phone technology to connect the customer with trained
Lexus Link advisors at any time. Purchasing the Lexus Link option includes a
one-year subscription to the Safety Plan, featuring airbag deployment
notification. In the event that an airbag is deployed, an emergency call is
automatically placed to the Lexus Link Call Center. In addition, occupants
can place an emergency call to the call center by pressing the button on the
overhead console.
Lexus Link advisors can contact emergency service or roadside assistance
providers and offer accident assistance information. Advisors can provide
additional services, including stolen vehicle location assistance and remotely
locking or unlocking doors. The customer can build on the Lexus Link package by
adding the Directions Plan, which provides route support, ride assist (taxi,
limousine or other transportation) and other information and convenience
services.
The top-tier Concierge Plan adds a number of useful services to turn Lexus
Link into a personal assistant. The Personal Calling option is a hands-free,
voice-activated calling service that enables customers to make and receive
calls in the vehicle. Customers can purchase prepaid packages of calling
minutes to fit their needs.
Luxury Through Technology and Convenience
Standard LX 470 equipment includes a leather-trimmed interior, a power
moonroof with one-touch control, power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel
with integrated audio controls, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and
rear-seat audio. The front seats feature integral armrests, and the front
seat cushions are height-adjustable at the front and rear for optimal
comfort.
Advanced electronics enhance on-board entertainment and convenience but
without adding to driver distraction. The standard DVD-based Lexus Navigation
System includes voice command for ease of use, and its seven-inch display screen
can show DVD movies when the transmission selector is in 'park' and the parking
brake is set.
Bluetooth® wireless technology allows the transfer of personal phone books
to the navigation system, from which the driver can make hands-free phone
calls via its touch-screen control panel. The driver can answer and end
calls, as well as adjust call volume, using steering wheel controls.
Home Entertainment on the Road
The standard Mark Levinson® Premium Audio System in the LX 470 is built
around a discrete amplifier design with 240-watts continuous average power
at .01 percent total harmonic distortion (20-20,000 Hz). The 11-speaker
system includes a rear-cargo-area subwoofer and plays both audio CDs and
DVDs. The optional Rear Seat Entertainment System plays DVDs over a 6.5-inch
wide-format overhead screen that deploys from the headliner ahead of the
second seat row. The option includes two sets of wireless headphones and a
remote control.
The standard security system incorporates an immobilizer into the key card
and uses a free-wheel key cylinder in the doors. This feature protects against
someone using the wrong key or trying to break the lock by inserting a
screwdriver or other tool into the cylinder by not allowing the door to open. A
Lexus dealer can set customized preferences for several of the vehicle's
electronic conveniences with programmable Lexus Personalized Settings.
